Shimmery Burlesque is a groundbreaking Burlesque stage show based on a true story that follows the life of Lady Shimmery, a dressmaker who becomes immersed in costuming for Burlesque.
Throughout the entire show, captivating Burlesque numbers unfold, seamlessly weaving into the fabric of Lady Shimmery's narrative. The show begins in Lady Shimmery's workroom, inspired by the romance of old-fashioned dressing rooms, adorned with sewing machines and mirrors. A cast of twenty glisten with rhinestones, feathers and tassels!
Audiences are then transported to the city of Paris, where timeless gardens, parasols, park benches, painters and French Cabaret provide the glamorous backdrop for the story of how Lady Shimmery fell in love with the art of tease.
Written and Directed by Holly Mouat, Shimmery Burlesque debuted in 2022 to sold-out audiences and standing ovations. The show is based on her mother, Kerrie Schultz (Shimmery Couture) - the head costume designer of the show. Cabaret Singer Abbey Paige Williams stars as Lady Shimmery, alongside a grand Burlesque ensemble.
WHAT do you LOVE MOST ABOUT SHIMMERY?
As much as I adore the costumes, music, and spectacle of Shimmery, what I love most is how it creates a space for people to shine and feel celebrated both on stage and in the audience. It embraces all sizes, ages, backgrounds and is not just about the performances but the love that flows from behind the scenes into the audience, creating such an empowering atmosphere. I feel incredibly lucky to be part of a cast full of inspiring and hardworking individuals who make this experience truly special.
How did you become a Shimmery Showgirl?
I'd recently finished my full time musical theatre course, and had always loved Old Hollywood Glamour and vintage fashion, music and movies. Burlesque was something I'd wanted to try for a long time, so I thought auditioning would be a good chance to try it out! I was a bit starstruck by some of the girls there, and did my best throughout the dance audition. After it commenced, I headed downstairs to the tram but something in me decided to turn around and go back to let the panel know that I was also a singer. They asked me to sing on the spot, which I did. After not hearing anything for a few months I'd assumed I hadn't been chosen. But I eventually got the email offering me the role of Lady Shimmery! Which was a huge surprise! I was so grateful, excited and a little nervous for the opportunity but it felt like all of the stars finally had aligned.

What's it like being backstage at Shimmery?
Backstage is full of feathers, rhinestones and chaos a lot of the time! Between quick changes, moving props and the beautiful showgirls, I usually try to find a moment of quiet just before the show starts because I tend to feel a mix of excitement, anticipation and most nervous in the moments just before it begins. I have so much love and respect for this cast, creatives and Holly and Kerrie, so I want to make sure I'm doing my absolute best. Since I'm on stage in between most acts I'm lucky enough to get to watch most of the show from side stage, most of the time in absolute awe to be sharing the stage with so many incredible performers.
What's your favourite Shimmery moment?
(Spoiler alert) but I absolutely love the moment at the end of curtain calls when Kerrie (the real Lady Shimmery) joins me on stage for a bow. It's incredibly special to share this teary moment with her and I'm so grateful she entrusted me to tell her story. As far as acts go I don't think I can pick a favourite.. although I do especially love the Chair Dance, I Love Paris and Peacock!
What's it like playing Lady Shimmery?
Like the real Lady Shimmery, I'm a big dreamer, a creative soul and someone who chose the path less traveled after growing up in a small country town. Much like her, I've faced struggles with self-confidence, belief and finding my direction. The parallels between us have only deepened during this experience, and I'm so grateful and have been chosen to tell Kerrie's story.
